Hey Mama's! It's May 1st so it's time to start our Month of Me Time!! I am so excited for this! A full month of self-care, girl time, and this week - how about a little beach time!?!? Uhh....Yes please!

Two weeks ago I had the amazing opportunity to spend a few days in Florida! I know what you're thinking - Orlando, Miami, Disney, Crowds, Tourists... NO! Not my kinda of vacay! While I was just outside of Tampa, I have seriously found a little piece of paradise, tucked away from all the craziness, that comes with "touristing" in the Sunshine State!
So where is this slice of Heaven? It's called Harborside Suites at Little Harbor, in Ruskin, Florida. Google it! No just kidding, click---->Here and I'll take you right there!

Mama's, I'm not kidding when I say this is the ultimate relaxing, grounding, soul searching place to be! I'm talking a glass of wine on the balcony watching a gorgeous sunset over Tampa Bay (you truly haven't seen a real sunset until you've seen this), dolphins and manatee's playing in the marina below, a private beach onsite, Tiki Bar, three pools, playground, tennis courts, 2 restaurants...and even private, in room massages available!

Hello?? Time for a beach getaway - ASAP! Still not convinced? Check out this slideshow of the resort and my time there!
First, the rooms are almost as spectacular as that view from the balcony! The colors, as we walked in, were fresh, coastal and so relaxing! Each room is decorated with the cutest coastal pieces, making sure you know you are definitely on beach time now! The beds, furniture and other room amenities are comfortable, convenient and include everything you need to live from your own little apartment for your entire stay!

As you start to explore the resort, you'll find the private beach - it is just the right size, not to crowded and right next to the resorts Sunset Grill Restaurant! Bathrooms and an outdoor shower are conveniently located next to the beach and chairs/umbrellas are included (first come, first serve basis) for your enjoyment!

Speaking of the Sunset Grill...one word, delicious! The menu speaks to any type of food your crew might be craving. You can get anything from wings, burgers, seafood, even a steak! We've tried several different items and have not been disappointed. The atmosphere here is amazing! Not only is there live music on the very large patio, overlooking the bay, but it's attached to the Tiki Bar!! Mama, you can sit and relax here for hours! Trust me!!

The resort also has another restaurant, Hooks, just up the road. Again, delicious! You can take the kids, girlfriends, or your guy to eat and no one will go away hungry! There is seriously the perfect type of food for any appetite!

As for recreation, Harborside Suites at Little Harbor, has a little bit of everything! How about three swimming pools (in addition to the beach), tennis courts, water rentals, even a playground for the little people! Not to mention, you're right on the marina where you can take a charter out for a day of fishing! It doesn't get any better than this!

Seriously, did you see that sunset? Just in case you missed it - let me show you that one more time...
Picture

Yeah - that right there is worth the plane ticket all by itself!

And just think, Mama - what an amazing trip with the kiddos this would be? All the memories you can make in just one weekend! How about a girls trip? Just you and your best girlies hanging on the beach, getting drinks, with little umbrellas, at the Tiki Bar? Amazing! Or even better, how about a romantic, weekend away with your guy? Just the two of you, relaxing and reconnecting?

You need this, Mama! Make yourself a priority this summer. Spend some time with whoever you choose (or even just by yourself), check out a new place, relax, and get your Mama Mojo back! And if the beach is your kind of thing Harborside Suites at Little Harbor is the perfect place for you and/or the whole family!

Whoop! Whoop! It's almost Mother's Day!! So that means it's time for us Mama's to celebrate, and be celebrated, for all our amazing, beautiful, multitasking, order keeping, everyone is still alive, fed and clothed, gloriousness!! Don't worry...we'll give a shout out to the Dad's out there during their month - but for now, let's focus on us...for a whole month! :)

We are going to spend the month of May talking about lot's of Mama things, but not in a "kids" sense! Let's spend the month on us...just us Moms! (I know, I know - What selfish bitches. But I'm ok with that! You?) Let's get out of the house this month, let's practice self-care, let's plan some girl time, even a vacation, and let's relax with a bath and glass of wine at least once...mmm, let's go with three times, a week! Ok?

To kick this off I want each one of you to go into your bathroom and kitchen and make a bag of all your feel good stuff. Seriously, I'm not kidding - right now, go grab a small overnight bag or basket and pull all your favorite nail polishes, manicure set, bath bombs and salts, candles, books, and of course, your favorite wine glass and make your "Mama's, May Me Time Bag"! Oh yeah - don't forget to order or go get your favorite adult beverage. I am sufficiently stocked with my favorite, Moscato!! (hint: If you don't have any/some of this stuff, and want it, click on the links and we'll get you all hooked up!)
Now, make sure you have liked The Tipsy Mama Facebook and Twitter page and subscribed to my emails because each week I am going to send/post/tweet all the fun, relaxing ways we get to unwind, rewind, and wine ourselves for the month of May!

In addition to Facebook and Twitter, I'll have some extra posts about all sorts of Mama stuff! This month how about we check out...
 • An amazing place for an all girls, beach getaway? Ok...this can be an amazing romantic getaway too - I just got back and yeah, totally amazing! I'm talking wine on the balcony, watching the dolphins/manatees play below, spectacular view, gorgeous sunsets, a little slow dancing before the night ends... (and...I'm ready to go back!)
 • How to start a self-care routine? You need this Mama! It's not all about just going to bed at a decent time, getting enough sleep, and doing your hair everyday so you feel "pretty". It's time for some serious relaxing and re-centering!
 • Find out what's missing from your life? I know, I know - your life is so full, so much going on...with everyone else. It's time to find out what makes your soul dance inside your body and start doing a little of that, as much as possible!
 • Do Mama's get enough girl time? For most of us the answer is no. Yes, you need girl time, just like guys need guy time! This is where you get to connect with other mama's, your best girlfriends and even make new friends. It's super important!
 • And whatever else I come up with over the next few weeks! :)

No matter what, May is all about you, Mama! So get your Mama's Me Time Bag ready and let's get started on some much needed ways to relax, have fun, reconnect, and become our best, happiest selves!! This is gonna be fun!

<![CDATA[10 Ways to Be an Awesome Mama AND Make Sure Your Kids Don't End Up with "Techno-Brain"]]>Mon, 02 Apr 2018 07:00:00 GMThttp://thetipsymama.com/the-tipsy-mama/10-ways-to-be-an-awesome-mama-and-make-sure-your-kids-dont-end-up-with-techno-brainThis post, and website, may contain affiliate links. That means that if you choose to click on a picture or link and make a purchase, I might get a small commission at no extra cost to you, and you'll get a great product at a sometimes discounted price (Win-Win for us both!). Be assured I only post products that I personally use, love, and/or trust the source site selling them. Feeling kinda sassy today...so let's start out like this:
A couple weeks ago my brother and sister-in-law left on a birthday trip to Austin, TX (because they totally get the "your spouse is your partner in crime/best friend, date night, trips without the kiddos thing" - haven't heard of that? Ok...let's put that down for another post.)

Of course this isn't really about the trip, but more about the amazing ways we have available to stay in touch in today's technical world...and, as you'll soon see, my complete disgust in many of the "adults", "parents" and older generation social media users, and their constant anti-tech, negative, bullying, "today's kids suck" posts, that seriously need a reality/responsibility check.

Wait! Hang on a minute. Back it up a little...before my crazy comes out.
(Calmly resuming) While they (my brother and sister-in-law) were at the airport, getting ready to leave for their trip, they called us through Facebook Messenger and their 2 year old got to talk to, and see them, as they walked through the airport. They showed him the airplane they will be flying on. They showed him all the people in the airport, and then after we got off the phone he received instant pictures of them in front of their plane and a special "We love you pic" of the two of them together. To which he responded with his own "selfie" to send back to them. This is amazing! They get to "be present" in their sons life even as they are traveling for a little "couple" time away!
Picture

At this point, I can already hear the haters (because we all get to see your hateful posts, everyday, online)...and I'm not listening. Yes, almost everything in today's world is instant. Yes, our children now expect instant gratification for most everything they want. Yes, screen time can become a problem, kids can become "addicted" to their electronics and games, etc, etc, etc...

Know whose fault that is? (This is the part that's going to piss some people off.)

Yep! The generation(s) that thought up and developed this technology - yours, mine, our parents - NOT our children. You know how when we were all growing up we always heard "Be careful what wish for, you just might get it"?
Karma. Has. Been. Served.

Our children didn't ask for the world they live in now. They didn't create it, and they certainly didn't dream up all the fancy, technological gadgets that have now enhanced their (and our) lives. They didn't ask for all their textbooks to be replaced with iPads, for everything to be computer based, or for parents to be so busy with work, 2nd jobs, running a house, paying bills, etc...that they are left to their own devices (haha...damn I'm funny!), for several hours a day.

Here's the problem that I see ALL THE TIME on social media - grown adults blaming the kids and being disgusted with the "way kids are nowadays". This is totally an ass backwards way of looking at this situation.

Seriously, do we really want to blame the kids? Talk about how disrespectful and irresponsible they are? How all they care about is being on their phones, Facebook, Snapchat, etc...? Really?

(Here comes that reality/responsibility check for the "older" generations.)

You, me, we...raised these kids! We raised them to take advantage of anything that makes their lives easier and more enjoyable...and provided them with the means to do exactly that! (Let that sink in for a second.) Honestly, that sounds like something that every parents wants for their children - happiness, an easy, abundant, fun, successful, amazing life! Right? That's what we all want, and definitely what we want for our kids!

But something happened along the way...all these cool things our generations discovered, developed and invented are addictive! They cause our brains, and our kids brains to react in a way that makes it hard to look away, put down, and do something active!
That's where this whole parenting thing comes in, Mama! We can't be mad and disgusted with our children for doing what we have allowed them to do! If someone wants to post something hateful about the kids of today, especially their own, they probably need to follow it up with..."and I take full responsibility for it".

These kids can't "get this way" all by themselves. We allowed it to happen as parents and adults.

The kids of today are actually pretty awesome! They are entrepreneurs. They love their country. They are so excited to learn about, and participate in, the proceedings of our government. They are creative. They are athletic, incredibly intelligent, and extremely talented in a diverse array of subjects and activities. They are trying to find their place in this world, and it's our jobs as parents to guide them...hands on guide them.

But how do we do that?

Make your kids your priority, Mama. That's it. Your job, your friends, your social life...nothing comes before raising your kids. Do whatever it takes to BE PRESENT IN your children's lives, now, including using the amazing technology we have today, in a responsible, beneficial, and healthy way.

Here are 10 (+1) ways that you can Be an Awesome Mama AND Make Sure Your Kids Don't End Up with "Techno-Brain"! <-----That is a Jen-ism; made up words that totally make sense to me.) :)
 1. Know what they are doing, where they are going, who their friends are, and who their friends' parents are! When your child mentions "Billy", you should know who Billy is. You should also know who Billy's mom is and how to get a hold of her. If you don't - find out, and go meet them!
 2. Sit down and have breakfast/dinner with your children at least 4/5 times a week. I know, everyone is sooo busy with crazy schedules. It doesn't matter - priorities Mama! Use your crock pot! Meal plan! (If you need help with meal plans, recipes and saving time check out my posts here and here)
 3. Set standards, boundaries and rules for your kids. This seems like a no brainer, but sometimes we feel "mean". It's OK to set boundaries for your children, just like you do for your own life. As long as they are set out of love and from your heart (as opposed to setting them out of spite, to be mean/manipulative/abusive).
 4. Set aside time specifically for your child(ren). Put it in your schedule, or on your calendar if you have to, just like you do a meeting or a Dr. appointment. It's non-negotiable time.
 5. Limit the time on their electronic devices. If it's a problem for your household make a rule, put them in a cabinet, have mandatory charging time for the electronics and "recharging" time for your family.
 6. Set mandatory "active" hours each day. During these hours they have to do something active/creative. (Subscribe here to get activities, recipes, meal plans and more right to your inbox!)
 7. TALK TO YOUR CHILD! No matter what age they are, talk to them. Yes, you are the parent, and yes, that means you are in charge, but there is no reason that you can't talk to your child like a friend. Use your parent "voice" when necessary, but only when necessary.
 8. Stay consistent. Inconsistency, on the part of a parent, is the one thing that will disrupt your parenting flow like nothing else! It doesn't matter if we are talking about bedtime, dinner time, play time or electronics time - kids THRIVE in a lovingly, structured environment.
 9. Use your child's electronic time to your advantage. If you allow a total of 2 hours a day on the iPad, make those hours while you are cooking dinner, making an important phone call, etc... This isn't the same thing as letting the iPad babysit - this is strategic parenting! Then you can use your free time for memory making, Mama!
 10. Just be the mama, Mama. Actively love and be present for, and with, your children everyday. Be consistent in your expectations, rules, and consequences, but look for reasons to say YES to their requests! Show them you trust and respect them and their decision making skills.
 11. BONUS TIP: Don't listen to the haters, negative Nancy's, or social media bullies! They obviously don't have enough to do in their unfulfilled, unhappy little lives and they have resorted to using the very devices, apps and services that make today's kids "sooo terrible", to voice their unnecessary, hate filled opinions! (Ironic isn't it?)
Now get out there and do what works for your family, Mama! Stay in your lane, raise your superstars, have fun and enjoy everyday with them! I promise soon enough you are going to have more time on your hands than you know what to do with.

You know what I LOVE more than anything? Saving money! Oh my gosh a good bargain and I am all in (thus the reason I need to be rich - but that's for another day, Mama)! I look for ways to save on EVERYTHING - travel, clothes, hotels, and especially groceries!

I used to think the only way to save money on our grocery bill was to buy generic brands, but finally realized I could buy the name brand stuff, sometimes cheaper, with a little planning and couponing! In today's online shopping, grocery pick-up/delivery world it is actually easier than ever - and I'm going to explain exactly how you do it, with just a little more time, and one more little extra step!

First (and probably most important), make a list! Shopping without a list is total savings sabotage! It's not happening! You'll find everything you don't need and add 15 things to your cart before you get through the cereal aisle!

Sit down for 20 mins and plan out what meals you want to have for the following week. Will you need anything for lunches? Snacks? And finally, what household items do you need? List them all out, then add any ingredients you need for each meal. Now, search through your cabinets to see what you already have or can use to substitute a specific item. There is absolutely no reason to buy something you already have!

Now that your list has been dwindled down to what you absolutely need to get, we get to the fun, money saving part! This next "extra" step will save you a bundle!

With stores like Walmart, Dillons, Kroger, Hyvee and Price Chopper (and probably several more in your area) offering online ordering you can easily see where your items are cheaper, in just a few minutes, without scouring through the paper ads every Sunday!
Picture
Once my list is made I log on to the Walmart Grocery To Go site and I act like I'm going to place an online order. I simply type in each of my items and add them to my cart, making sure the quantity is correct for each one. As I go along, the website gives me a nice little list of each item plus the price of each, and a final total at the end! Once I have them all typed in, I move to the next store, which in my case (area) is Dillons.

I log onto their system and add each item to my cart, but this time noting if the item is cheaper at Walmart or Dillons. I then separate my list from earlier (that we dwindled down), into a "Buy at Wal-mart List", and a "Buy at Dillons List".

At this point, Mama, you have two choices.

1. Take each of your lists and head to that respective store. Yes, you are shopping at two different stores, and yes, it's going to take you a little more time, but I have personally found that doing this saves between $25 and $40 PER SHOPPING TRIP, without the use of coupons! That's up to an extra $120 each month that can go into your savings, toward debt payoff, or just added to your fun money!

2. OR...if you hate standing in that checkout lane and fighting the crowds, (or would rather use that shopping time to go to the gym, sit outside in the sunshine, take a bath...whatever you like to do for "me" time) just place each of the orders on your store's online grocery website and pick up at your designated time! Super easy! Super Fast! And you just got through both stores in less than 30 mins, with a trunk full of groceries, AND you still saved your $25-$40 for the week! Now you're winning, Mama!!

Ohhh...You want MORE than $25-$40 in savings each week? No problem! I got you covered there too, Mama! One word - COUPONING!!

Now, there is Couponing and there is Extreme Couponing! I am personally a Couponing girl. Do I know how to Extreme Coupon? Yes! Is it Awesome? Yes! Do I have space for a stockpile? No! Therefore in this house we use whatever coupons are available for what we are going to personally use. Of course, if I happen to have a BOGO coupon or .50 off of 2 items, we're going to get 2, even if we only need one. But if I have 5 BOGO coupons and I know we won't use that many of that item, I leave my extra coupons, on the shelf, next to that item so that some other Mama can use it! (Look at that...being all nice and generous, using my heart again! See, I use it more than people think!)
You can get coupons from LOTS of different places. Most stores have a savings card program that you can sign up for and you will automatically get a reduced price on some products and are able to load electronic coupons onto your account that will automatically be taken off your order when you pay. Of course, we also have several ways to clip, download, and print coupons!

Click here to download my FREE list of the best Coupon Printing Websites! You don't even have to search! This is a point and click list - you go right to the site!!

To do a really good job of couponing it does take some organization. If you want to save the most it is going to be a really good idea to get, or make, some sort of couponing binder or other divided envelope system so that you can easily see and know what products you have coupons for and when they expire. Each week you'll want to sort through your coupons, throwing out any that have expired, adding new ones to their respective categories and matching them to your grocery list for the week!

If you want to really learn how to use this system and do some serious couponing - you can take The Tipsy Mama's Complete Couponing Course, where you'll get your choice of a super cute Coupon Binder or Wallet Organizer, Category Templates/Stickers, Coupon Holder/Divider Slickies, Detailed How To, Shedules and Unlimited email/messenger support from me, personally!!

Ok, Mama! Now get your list made, compare stores and buy cheap! Save some major $$ and go have a little fun! Treat yourself, with that extra moolah, to a mani/pedi, get your hair colored...or grab a bottle of Moscato (ohhh...that's my favorite), your glass and a comfy spot, and just relax for a bit!!

11+ years of daycare and I have been asked over and over by parents, "Why will he/she eat at your house, but not at home?" (Holy cooks alot! At around 1,000 meals/snacks per year, that's over 11,000 meals I've served to these crazy monkey's!)

That being said, if there is one thing this mama can do, it's coming up with meals and snacks that little people will eat! Even the pickiest munchkins will sit at my table and chow down!
Yes, getting them to eat has a lot to do with what we serve them, but I'll throw you a little hint, Mama - it has WAY more to do with "how" we serve them. If you want dinner time to go a little smoother, set a routine, have it close to the same time every night, and sit down with your child to eat together. At daycare, we all sit down at the same times, everyday, we all eat the same things...and we DO IT TOGETHER! The munchkins even help prepare the meal, help serve their friends, and clear their places at the table, everyday (yes, at 2 yrs old).

There isn't anything else going on at that time. Everyone is eating.

In case anyone here hasn't caught on to the ways of little people, they are sponges. They mimic EVERYTHING we do (and say) around them! So, if you eat, they eat. Whatever is on your plate, that's what they want. (Great time to show how well mama and daddy play the sharing game, huh?)

Ok...Hint Over! You get the picture, right? If not, let's become friends and chat! :)

Back to my amazing new offer!

So, I was sitting here today and thought, why not put all those years of menu planning and food prep out there for other mama's, dad's, and maybe even some daycare providers, to use? And then my heart started talking (because sometimes I use that too), and it said, "And why not do it for free?" Great idea Jen! You are fabulous, generous and super smart! (Just getting my positive self talk in there for the day! Try it. It works!) ;)

I mean think about it - years of meals, snacks, menus and recipes, all typed up, sent to you, and ready for you to pick and choose through, put on your table and watch your kiddos gobble them up. All while knowing they are balanced, healthy meals/snacks, AND fast and easy to get from kitchen to table. (Because honestly, no daycare provider spends more than 30 minutes preparing a meal.) And did I mention this is all FREE?

Balanced, Fast and Free? This is a no brainer, win/win/win for you mama!

How do you get in on this crazy, FREE, genius, simple mealtime planning? Just fill in your name and email below, and every Wednesday, in addition to all the other great things I send The Tipsy Mama Peeps, you'll get a new, FREE, kid friendly meal/recipe/dessert/snack and probably a few activities thrown in here and there!

Whaaat? You get to feed your kids AND make some memories with them? Yep! Cuz that's what we do here!

Hey Mama’s! So being a daycare provider for 11+ years I’ve learned to handle a lot of things these little people do, or need to do, easily, and it’s usually something that tends to drive mama’s crazy!

I’ve had many, many conversations (conferences, training's, whatever you want to call them) with mamas on everything from their little one not sleeping through the night to...How can I get them to eat dinner? How can I get them to stop biting? How can I get them to pick up their toys? And the biggest one…How do I potty train and do it quickly?
One thing I have become very good at is potty training these little monkey’s in record time! Seriously, I’ve had people ask if they can enroll for just a couple of weeks so that I can potty train for them! (No. No, you can’t do that Mama. Although, maybe I should reconsider this? Maybe a 1 month Potty Training Only Daycare? Hmmm...Interesting business idea!) Anyway...back to hardcore potty training!

Potty training starts at home and carries over to daycare. This is where a lot of parents get it wrong. They show up on a Monday morning for daycare and hand their provider a bag of extra clothes, exclaiming “Suzy started potty training this weekend! She’s in a pull-up now. Here are her extra clothes in case she has an accident.”

1. Suzy is going to have an accident, LOTS of them.
And
2. Putting your child in a pull-up does not constitute potty training.

Suzy has no idea she is “potty training”. Suzy’s just going to daycare to learn and play with her friends today. Mom and Dad started potty training over the weekend. Suzy got some new panty like diapers and got to sit on her big girl potty chair whenever she wanted.

This will work…eventually. But it’s going to be a long, stressful road. Don’t do this to yourself, your child or your daycare provider, Mama! I promise there is a better way!

If your child is ready to potty train it can be done in a weekend! No, I’m not kidding. Yes, I know your best friend said it was terrible. Her child regressed 5 times and even went completely backwards after 6 months, ending up back in a diaper for a full month. That’s OK!

There. Is. A. Better. Way! (Psst...I know what it is! Aren't you glad we became friends now?!?!)

I’m sure you’ve read, in lots of Mom Groups on Facebook, all the different opinions on when to start, whether to use pull-ups or not, which potty chair is the best, etc, etc, etc… You may have even looked this all up on Pinterest and started reading “How To” books from the experts! Don’t get me wrong. This is all great, Mama! Good job on your part for trying to be prepared, getting a plan in place and wanting to get this right the first time!

I mean, it’s going to be amazing to not have to buy diapers anymore! Oh geez, do you know how much that is going to free up in your budget? That’s for sure a date night each month going forward! (You have date nights, right? If you don’t, make it a priority now Mama – it’s important! We’ll talk about that later. First things first…)

Let’s talk about some things you don’t want to do.

 • Don’t make this a competition with your friends. There are no winners or losers here. It’s not a race. In all areas of motherhood and family life, you do what is best and necessary for your child and family…when it is best and necessary. Period.
 • Don’t take the opinions and suggestions of friends and family too serious. Your child might do things the same way and he/she might not.
 • Don’t get stressed out before you ever start and don’t expect your child to fail. This is a positive, exciting time! Keep it light and fun and it’ll go MUCH smoother!
 • Don’t let someone tell you that your child “should be” potty trained by 18 months, 2 years, 3 years. I know, a lot of preschools require it by 3, but don’t get all crazy trying to MAKE your child do this.
 • Don’t let someone tell you that a child can’t be potty trained before he/she is 18 months old. They can, IF they are ready. I’ve done it many times!

Potty training is a HUGE milestone for kiddos! It’s like their right of passage into “Big Kid” life! So much starts to happen for them now. This is when they find their independence (not always the easiest next step for mamas) and really start to use it!

Now go get'em mama! You got this potty training thing in the bag and I'm here to help!

Sign up for my FREE download, "Is It Time to Potty Train? How to know if your child is ready!" It’ll come right to your inbox, you’ll be ready to go and be diaper free in no time, Mama!

I'd love to hear what you think about anything you purchase, just send me an email at jennifer@thetipsymama.com and let's chat!
Picture
You know what my least favorite mama thing to do is? Budgeting! Oh lord how I hate looking over that spreadsheet every week! I mean spending money is not a problem. Making the money is amazing! Budgeting…sucks ass! It is seriously the one thing that makes adulting not always fun! (Well...that and shitty exes - but that's a totally different post, for different day!)

As a mama, married or single, cutting expenses is essential to running a successful household! Anyone with kiddos ranging from, oh…somewhere between 0 and 25 years old, knows these tiny, and not so tiny, humans can EAT!
One of the best ways to reduce expenses is to cut your grocery bill. But, honestly, how do you do that? Food costs what it costs (not to mention that cost continuously rises), and your family has to eat what they need to eat.

Sure, you can buy cheaper foods. However, they might be of lesser quality and full of sugar, fillers and preservatives that lead to unhealthy habits, in turn leading to health issues. Not to mention most of the time we end up eating more of these foods because they don’t fill us up as long.

So, as Mama’s we have to decide what are we willing to trade off here? Is it better to buy cheap, but then end up spending more because we eat more, or possibly run into health problems? Or is it better to buy the more expensive, fresh products and probably spend more up front?
Picture

In our house, we 100% absolutely love our sweets and snacks! So, I’m not even going to tell you a story about how we eat only the best, clean and carb free! We don’t. For heaven’s sake, my blog is called The Tipsy Mama! Do you know how many carbs a bottle of wine has in it?

Yeah, I said bottle. Surely I’m not the only one that can polish one (two on a bad day) of those bad boys off by myself? If you shook your head with a “MmmHmm…I know it girl”… we need to be friends, yesterday! But, I digress...

While we don’t have a stellar diet, I do make sure we eat as many whole foods (not processed) as possible, along with our snacks, pastas, pizzas and “adult” beverages! But geez, that can get expensive! Oh, and I forgot to mention, I also run a daycare so I feed 7 other families little people, 2 healthy meals and 2 mostly healthy snacks, 5 days a week! And I do it all for less than $150 per week. So, how do I cut down our grocery bill?

One way is Apps! (If we become friends I'll tell you all the other ways too!) Ok, ok…I know. Technology is starting to take over everything, but one place I LOVE it is when I’m grocery shopping. The following apps (that I now use every time I shop and eat out…and even when I book travel), downloaded straight to your phone, will save you some serious moolah every month! Actually, they don’t just save you money, these apps put the cash right back into your wallet!

ibotta

Picture
ibotta is absolutely my go to app for groceries and more! It is sooo easy! All you have to do is sign up for an account (you can do that by clicking here) and download the app to your iPhone/Android phone and then choose, and add, the products you plan to buy. Once you have made your purchases, you scan or take a picture of your full receipt and within 24 hours they will add the rebate total to your account.

Once you reach at least $20 you can cash out by either choosing to have your $$ deposited right into your bank account or you can choose to receive a digital gift card from lots of different stores and restaurants!

Recently I learned that ibotta isn’t JUST for groceries (hence the “and more” above)! You can also book hotels and flights through the app and get cash back once those purchases are completed, and find cash back offers for online shopping at places like Ulta.com, Sephora.com, Etsy, and even restaurants!

When you sign up by clicking here (or any other ibotta link/picture in this post) you'll get a $10 cash bonus for FREE once you complete your first uploaded receipt. That’s $10 PLUS whatever rebates were on your receipt!

So far, in 30 days I have earned a total of $13.83.
We'll tally all this up at the end and see if it's all worth it. (Spoiler alert - It is!!)

Checkout 51

Picture
Checkout 51 works pretty much just like ibotta does. Again, you sign up for an account, download the app, choose the products you want to add to your list, and then scan (take a picture of) your receipt. Checkout 51 is strictly for grocery items, but they do also have a weekly contest where one user win’s $500! All you have to do is add the contest “item” and then take a picture of your receipt of at least $60 each week and you’re automatically entered.

Again, you can cash out when you reach at least $20 and you can receive your $$ either by check or by distribution through an approved 3rd party electronic payment method, such as PayPal. You can signup for an account by clicking here!

So far, in 30 days I have earned a total of $7.01 with Checkout 51.

Dosh

Picture

Dosh is the same kind of concept, but a little different in that there are no receipts to be uploaded. All you do is link your debit/credit cards to your Dosh account, in the app, and as you shop at the stores (online or in store) or eat at the restaurants, listed in the app, using one of the debit/credit cards you have linked to your account, Dosh will automatically add the cash into your account!

Once you reach $15 you can cash out and have the money deposited directly into your checking account. For example, if you eat at Papa John’s (and pay with a linked card) you’ll get 5% cash back. Get your oil changed at Jiffy Lube you’ll get 10% cash back!

Dosh also has travel deals, much like ibotta. Again, all you need do is book your hotel through the app, pay for your stay with one of your linked debit/credit cards and they will add the money into your account!

As an example, I checked to see what a hotel in downtown Tampa, FL would get me. If I chose to stay at the Hilton, Tampa Downtown for two nights, I would receive $55 cash back total! In addition, for my first hotel booking I’ll get an additional $25 on top of that as a bonus!

Not too bad for items and trips you are going to buy anyway, huh? Sign up by clicking here (or on any other Dosh link/picture in this post) and get a $5 bonus (free extra cash) on top of your first cash back offer!

So far, in 30 days I have earned a total of $7.00 with Dosh.

Walmart Savings Catcher (and Grocery To Go)

Picture
Walmart Savings Catcher is the only app that is store specific, but if you shop at Walmart even a few times a month it is well worth downloading!

Once the app is downloaded, to your iPhone/Android phone, you can scan up to 7 receipts each week into the app. In this app it is simply done by scanning the QR code at the bottom of your receipt and then hitting the submit button. They take it from there!

Walmart will verify every item you purchased against the prices you would have paid at other stores in your area. This comparison can take up to 3 days, but once they are finished you will get a notification/email letting you know the results. If their prices are cheaper - YOU WIN! Walmart will give you the difference in an electronic Walmart gift card (in your Walmart Pay wallet) that you can use on future shopping trips.

If you pair this with the Walmart To Go service (you order online, they bring it right to your car), don't forget to ask them to give you a paper receipt so you can scan it into ibotta and Checkout 51. You will automatically get an email receipt, but the paper receipt is so much easier to scan in! You can put this request into the "Special Requests" spot when you place your order! Click here to use Walmart To Go and get $10 off your first order!

So far, in 30 days I have earned a total of $19.38 with Walmart Savings Catcher, and LOTS of time with Walmart To Go!
My Totals for 30 days of using these apps, as often as I could remember:
ibotta - $13.83
Checkout 51 - $7.01
Dosh - $7.00
Walmart Savings Catcher - $19.38
Walmart To Go - Countless hours!
Total for the first month in 2018 - $47.22

That total is definitely worth spending five minutes after every shopping trip scanning my receipts in! That's almost $600 a year in savings on things I'm already planning to buy, and this is my first month semi-consistently using them. I'm excited to see how much more I'll average each month as I become better ,and more consistent, at using these apps!
Wait! Just a few tips to make sure you get the most $$ possible:
 • Don't worry about having to scan through the apps before you go if you don't have time. You can buy your whole list and then search for the products you bought and match them up that way.
 • If you shop mostly at Wal-mart, you can use ibotta, Checkout 51, and Walmart Savings Catcher for every shopping trip! They are in no way tied to each other. That means one shopping trip can get you $$ from all 3 apps! It may not seem like a lot, but $5-$10 here and there adds up to a pretty substantial amount!
 • ibotta and Checkout 51 are not tied to coupons you might use. So you can use coupons in addition to the apps! For example: Say you have a BOGO coupon for a product. As far as the apps are concerned you bought 2 of the same item, even though you only paid for one. If the item you bought is allowed a multiple item rebate, you'll get the rebate for both items!
 • BONUS CHRISTMAS TIP: I have decided this year I am going to just let all my moolah in these apps, accumulate until just before Black Friday and then deposit all of them into my checking account! Whoop, Whoop! #winningchristmas

Now get out there Mama! Get your shop on and save that moolah!!

Valentine's Day is just a couple weeks away and while women are super easy to buy for, especially on Valentine's Day (Hello?? Jewelry, Candles, Bath bombs, Spa day, Shopping spree)...men are not so easy! Seriously, it's so hard for most women to decide on the perfect Valentine's gift for her favorite guy of all time.
First, let's talk about why this is, then I'll fix this dilemma for you! Let's face it, Valentine's Day was probably brought about by a woman who didn't get what she wanted for Christmas - and was giving her night in shining armor one more chance to get it right! (OMG, I crack myself up!) Not really, it was way more cynical than that - not a whole lot of romance, and even a couple executions, ancient Roman style. Not kidding! Look it up. (Look at us learning a little History along the way.)

Anyway, in today's world Valentine's Day is all about love...being in love, showing your love, stating your love, making sure everyone knows...You. Are. In. Love.

Not really a "manly" kind of day, right? As a woman that makes it really hard to know what to buy the guy that means everything to you! Like is this a tools kind of day? Sports? New car parts? Drinking? The answer is yes, to all of that - kinda.

But those are the same things that you get him for his birthday, Father's Day, and Christmas, right? And, as women, we want Valentine's Day to be super special for him. No worries! I have found the very best gifts that he will NEVER expect! You are going to win "The Best Girlfriend/Fiance/Wife of All Time Award", this year, hands down!! Keep this post bookmarked and you're #winning for the next four years, Mama!

The LoveBook

Man Crates

Personalized Whiskey Crate

Muscle Hustle Fitness Crate
It doesn't get any easier than a Man Crate! One of these equals the manliest gift you can send him. You know how we love to get a surprise bouquet of flowers? Yeah, this is the manquivalent (yeah, I made that word up, it's called a Jen-ism)! Feel free to send his Man Crate right to the office, or make sure he gets it in front of all the guys. You will be the Girlfriend/Fiance/Wife envy of every one of them! And don't worry about options, there are so many to choose from! Whatever type of guy you have...there is a matching Man Crate to go with him

Whisky Decanter Set

If your guy has a man cave or just sits at the kitchen table for a good drink with the guys, once in a while, let him do it in style with a Whiskey Decanter Set! There is nothing more manly than having your shit together (or at least looking like it) when guy time, or game day, rolls around. Help him out, feed his ego a little - one of these is a manly, sophisticated, my girl is better than yours gift!

Original Grain Watch

Original Grain watches are a step above any other watch you can buy today. These watches are handcrafted right here in the USA, and made with Exotic Woods and Steel. They are sophisticated, rugged and inspired by nature. Whether your #1 guy is a sports buff, executive, outdoorsman or just an all around great guy, these watches will impress him and anyone he associates with! He gets to wear it, but who's really winning here? You are! That's right Mama, you're winning Valentine's Day by a landslide!
And there you have it! If you need the perfect Valentine's Day gift for your #1 guy of all time, you can't go wrong with any of these amazing options! Now, get your shopping on Mama and show him why you're the best thing that's ever happened to him!

<![CDATA[Hey Mama...Use the Fancy Glasses!]]>Fri, 05 Jan 2018 15:27:26 GMThttp://thetipsymama.com/the-tipsy-mama/hey-mamause-the-fancy-glassesThis post contains affiliate links. That means that if you choose to click on a picture or link and make a purchase, I might get a small commission at no extra cost to you, and you'll get a great product at a sometimes discounted price (Win-Win for us both!). Be assured I only post products that I personally use, love, and/or trust the source site selling them. Picture
Yesterday morning one of my daycare moms walked in and said "Wow, fancy glass for the Thrive shake this morning?" It took me a minute to figure out what she was talking about. I drink my Thrive shake, and everything else, out of an Iced Tea Glass or Stemless Wine Glass...all the time, everyday. Those are literally the only options you can choose from in my cabinets. This is apparently not a normal thing?
Picture
!Just kidding! I know it's not the norm. We all grew up with 2 sets of dishes right? You had the family/daily dishes and the "company" dishes. There was the plastic cup shelf and then way up high were the pretty glasses, that were taken down when company came by. I get it. Kids break stuff. It's expensive to replace. We all like having nice stuff, right? But how fun is it to have nice stuff that you rarely use?

It's no secret, I have a problem with rules, and doing things the way others think you should...always have. I'm 42 years old and have just now figured out that it's ok, in fact, it's flipping awesome to do things your way, in your time, and completely freeing to not care, a single ounce, what others think! (Look at me not using even one cuss word in that sentence. Way to go Me!) So, when I "grew up" and got my own house I decided there were no rules on the dishes. I, and my kids, will drink out of "fancy" glasses everyday, and by God we always have!

Don't get me wrong. I'm a daycare provider. Two year olds are NOT drinking chocolate milk from stemless wine glasses at the daily breakfast table! (I'm not stupid, nor do I have time to clean that kind of mess, that often.) Yes, we have a cabinet of sippy cups and plastic tumblers, even one with divided cafeteria style plates. But, how special do you think your 7, 10 or even 15 year old feels when he or she doesn't have to pick from the bottom shelf all the time? What message could that be sending? I'll tell you. You are silently telling your child...
 • I trust you.
 • There is no one more special than you.
 • You deserve the best.
 • I respect you.
 • I have confidence in you.
 • I love you.
Really? All that comes from letting them use the fancy glasses? YES! You know the saying, "Actions speak louder than words"? It is 100% true, especially when raising kids! Just think about the confidence you are helping to build in them. You're sending a message that they are trusted. Isn't that awesome and super easy?

I know some of you are going to get hung up on them being "glass". It's ok. That's a natural mama thing to do. (Safety first!) Guess what? They make plastic "fancy" glasses now. Whaaat?? Yep, they do! And let's not get stuck in the kitchen. This isn't really about the glasses. Think about it, where in your life do you give off a "others are more special than your kids" vibe? Do you have guest towels, sheets, or comforters? A bathroom that is off limits? Maybe a special dish that you reserve for cooking only when someone is visiting?

I hear you already! "But Jen, I want things to look and be nice when people come to visit. Kids can really be tough on things." You're right! But honestly, do you think your family and friends don't expect that from your kids? And maybe you absolutely can't get past the glasses thing. That's OK. Pick something else? Today, make a declaration to your children that there are no longer "Good Towels" and "Your Towels", they are free to use any towel in the house that they want! Your special dish, that they absolutely love, is no longer only for when someone else comes over for a visit. You would LOVE to make it for them, any night! Convey those messages to them. Let them know that they are just as special as anyone else that walks through your door.

You can do it Mama! Go build confident, trusted, happy kids!
Kinda feels awesome to not stress over the fancy, company only glasses anymore, huh?

<![CDATA[5 Ways to Help Your Child Release Anxiety and Live a Heart Centered Life]]>Tue, 19 Dec 2017 17:42:51 GMThttp://thetipsymama.com/the-tipsy-mama/5-ways-to-help-your-child-release-anxiety-and-live-a-heart-centered-lifeThis post contains affiliate links. That means that if you choose to click on a picture or link and make a purchase, I might get a small commission at no extra cost to you, and you'll get a great product at a sometimes discounted price (Win-Win for us both!). Be assured I only post products that I personally use, love, and/or trust the source site selling them. Picture
The other night I was walking through the store and got a text from my niece. She said, “You know what you should write about? Your anxiety when you were a kid. I don’t know if you still have it, but I think that would be cool to read.” My fingers typed, “That’s a great idea! I’m writing about that this week!” My brain said, “Shut up…You aren’t writing that! No one will read it. Who do you think you are writing about something like that?” Because, yep I still have it and that voice is super ugly some days.
But that’s what it is…a voice. A separate voice from who I really am. I just realized this within the last year. Forty-one years of listening to a voice that isn’t you, is exhausting; and just now, in the last 12 months, I have started hearing the real me, the one that lives and speaks through my heart. This voice is so much more courageous! She’s independent, smart (actually pretty genius), and freaking hilarious (if I do say so myself).

Everyone has this voice. Some of us just have a voice that’s crazier than others (mine is bat shit crazy). Don’t believe me? Just stop for a second and listen to yourself. It’s all those words in your head you don’t say out loud. No matter what you’re reading, listening to, or doing it’s ALWAYS talking back there. Yeah, that one.

That voice is there our entire life. When I was a kid mine made me scared of everything. I was afraid to play in the front yard because I thought a car would run up over the curb and hit me. As an adult, it has wreaked havoc in all areas of my life, especially relationships. It’s what makes us choose the wrong people, over the right people. It keeps us stuck on paths of stagnant familiarity, over adventure, because the risk of following our heart and not succeeding is too much to process. It keeps us in relationships that aren't good, over ones that feed our spirit. I mean, isn’t it better to fail with a person you don’t truly love (not a huge loss when it doesn't work), than to take a chance with the person that completes your soul (it would be devastating to lose them)? That voice is what keeps us from making these "mistakes".
Picture
Almost everything this voice tells us to do is out of fear. Yes, it’s a defense mechanism, meant to protect us. And yes, in some areas it helps, but most of the time it’s complete bullshit. It’s there from childhood, and gets stronger and stronger the more we use it. Forty-one years is a long time to let it control things.

Here’s the thing, our heart is always trying to correct that voice. When our heart and head are at odds, it creates anxiety. A whole life of it, until we learn to make the voice in our head stop talking, or at least learn when and how to ignore it.

As a daycare provider, I’ve seen this voice in my little people. Your little people, Mama. I also now recognize it in my own kids, from when they were little. Oh how I wish I could move what I learned in 2017 back 20 years.

Think about it for just a second. Does your child have anxiety? Is he or she afraid of “irrational” things, for no real reason? Constantly worrying about the little things? As a parent, that doesn’t understand this, it is no doubt frustrating, annoying and exhausting. Our first response is to FIX our child, to CHANGE them so they are "normal". Honestly, from someone that has lived this, that’s the worse thing that could have been done for me. All that tells me is “I am not normal.” “My feelings are not ok.” “I am not good enough.” Guess what? Every fear just got multiplied 10 times over.

I tried to be like everyone else. I played in the front yard. I dated (and married) people that I shouldn’t have, took jobs I didn't like. I was unhappy, unfulfilled and all that just makes a person angry, cynical and no fun to be around. Looking back, my heart always told me what I should be doing, I was just too scared to listen and too afraid of what others would think. And usually, what I ended up doing was the opposite of what I truly should be doing for myself, but I kept up with the status quo, and I had others approval. The problem? I was still at odds with myself, so it never worked. In fact, a lot of times it turned into a total shit show.
Picture

Holy crap, that’s a ton for someone to digest, huh? As mama’s, now what do we do? Where's the book on this? You don’t want your little person to turn out like that! You don’t want them to be scared and angry and feel like they have to hide who they truly are all the time, right? You don’t want your child to be emotionally exhausted from trying to be “normal” their whole life.

What if instead of trying to change and fix them, we completely accept them? Just as they are. Instead of brushing these "irrational" fears off as nonsense, what if we help them refocus on the positives? What about giving them an outlet to express these fears? How about instead of saying “That’s silly. That will never happen.”, we say, “Oh my gosh, that would be super scary! How can we make sure that doesn’t happen?” What if we taught our kiddos how to switch their thoughts, how to ignore that voice, how to live from their heart…and, what if we helped them do that when they are 6, or 10, or 15?

I know! That’s a lot of responsibility for a mama! That’s a lot of work, especially when you have your own voice telling you how you’re supposed to “parent” and “discipline” your child. Not to mention everyone that offers up their opinions…and judgements.

Let’s get rid of that one right off the bat. Other people's opinions and judgments mean squat! Trust your instincts Mama. You know your child. You know yourself and you are the perfect person to help your munchkin. Sure, you can ask for opinions and help, and if you don’t like what you hear, you can leave it right where it came from. Remember, the people giving you those opinions are doing so through their own “voice” and more often than not, they are fear based opinions. Let them go if they don’t resonate with your heart.

Here are a few heart-centered ways that you can help your kiddo(s) redirect their own thoughts and help them train their brain to take a backseat to their heart, long before adulthood…

 1. Teach them to breath. Slow, deep, calm, cleansing breaths.
 2. Help them come up with a positive, reassuring statement that they can repeat anytime they feel anxious. Something that is appropriate for their age and easy for them to remember. Maybe something along the lines of “Everything is ok. I am safe. Good things happen to me.” This helps them to redirect their thoughts, calm their emotions, and begin expecting those good things!
 3. Get them a journal, let them write all their thoughts (good and bad) down. Writing, at any age, can be cathartic. Just having the ability to get all that negative stuff out and release it onto a piece of paper can make such a huge difference!
 4. Create a specific, special space for them to go to calm down. This is NOT a timeout space. This is THEIR space. It is comfortable, familiar, and all theirs. Maybe it’s a corner with pillows andblankets, or a bench with books that they love to read, a space where they can blare music, or a pretty nook with a little table or desk, withlights and draping where they can color/draw. Whatever it is, it’s their space and they get the freedom to be in that space whenever they need to be.
 5. Ask them, specifically, for, and about, positive things throughout their day. So often parents focus on the negatives and bad things children do or don't do. Look for reasons to say yes to your child! Look for positive things to celebrate and talk about all day, every day! Of course, handle the negative things when they come up, but don’t look for them, and don’t focus on them any longer than necessary.
